10 Best Weekend Getaways From Chicago Within Driving Distance
Travel has become so expensive this summer so I’m trying to keep my travel local this year while also still feeling like I can escape the city. And the good thing about the Midwest is that there are a ton of cities all within little pockets of each other. A lot of these destinations are just a few hours drive, or even train ride, away from the city.
Whether you’re planning a girls’ trip, romantic getaway, solo adventure with your dog, or you just want to do a quick trip away, there are countless weekend getaways from Chicago that don’t require hopping on a plane.
1.) Galena
Drive time from Chicago: 3 hours
Best for: Girls’ trips/bachelorettes, spa weekends, family weekend
If you’re looking for a charming small-town escape, Galena is one of the best weekend trips from Chicago. I recently went here and I was shocked by how much I loved it. Extremely walkable, has a ton of wineries (it’s not the best wine but the vibes are great), and extremely cheap. Not to mention, all the shops are so adorable!

Hike or have a picnic during sunset at Horseshoe Mound Preserve

Lake Geneva is one of the easiest and most popular weekend getaways from Chicago. I used to come here every summer for training for my summer job and there was so much to do outside. This lake town offers a mix of relaxation and adventure with lakefront resorts, boating, shopping, and good food. They even have some fun bars to frequent!
